Clerks 2

So check it out fucktards, I've decided to start a new hobby... Given that I'm still currently working on my script *proudly pats back*, I'm going to start giving movie reviews. As a lot of you might know, I love movies. Everything about the art of cinema. I know you're all saying under your breath, "yeah, well who the fuck doesn't?" But I enjoy movies on a deeper level... you fucks. I'll start with the movies I've seen this summer, then everynow and again, jump back to the past and review a movie from my personal collection. And with all this new fun, I think I will present to you my first review. I think since the director is one of my favorites, this certainly is accurate...

CLERKS II

For those who currently read my diary, the majority of you are Kevin Smith fans. His filmology includes Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl (what's the big deal?), and of course the $25,000 dollar budget film that became a huge success at Sundance and it's retail and rental sales, Clerks.

This is the sequel. The first sequel to be technical. And some of you might be thinking, well, all he's made is sequels. And if you are thinking that, then you need to be taken to the back and shot. Not in the head, just like.. in the leg or something. This the actual only sequel in his career, which is based on the characters that he fell in love with in Jersey.

I was excited about this movie. But at the same time curious. Most sequels as you may agree tend to use the same jokes and catch phrases as it's predecessor (ie, Austin Powers, Rush Hour) preventing the new material to be in any way original. And while the last movie had recurring characters from all the Jersey Films, Holden McNeil, Banky Edwards, TS, Brodie, Walt, Steve-Dave, Hooper, and even Willam the idiot man-child, Smith went with a different direction. Though this did have cameos from Ben Affleck with a brief role, and with Jason Lee as a completely new character, this movie stuck with it's four corners, Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran), Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson), Jay (Jason Mewes), and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith).

My review: fucking superb! This film was completely inventive while staying the same atmosphere as the original. With a clever black and white intro, the film starts with Dante pulling up to the Quick Stop convenience store, lifting the shutters, and discovering the store completely in flames. After the credits role, Dante and Randal are now employed under the fake fast food Mooby restaurant. Working there for a year, Dante is on his way to start his new life with current fiance (Jennifer Schwalbach-Smith) moving to Florida the next day. New characters include Elias (Trevor Fehrman) a god loving, ringer and manager Becky (Rosario Dawson).

Hijinks ensue when a newly clean and sober (yes, SOBER) Jay and Silent Bob, direct from rehab from a bust 6 months previous, still continue to deal drugs just outside the joint. Though each moment they are on camera, a jolt of excitement shot through my body, they didn't entirely steal the show. Randal's hilarity continues to be strong with all rants and raves about handicapped, Lord of the Rings, and bringing "Porch Monkey" from a racial slur, to a common non-offensive everyday phrase.

And the acting is better!!! The film provides much better performances from Jeff Anderson and Brian O'Halloran. Each character can really pull of it's quirks, especially Trevor Fehrman with his character. The movie includes it's references to Star Wars, LOTR, and even Transformers, moments of sentiment (showing Kevin Smith has grown over the years) and the great scene where Randal (for Dante's going away present) buys an event of beastiality or "interspecies erotica" as referred in the movie in which a woman puts on a show of fellating a male donkey.

With the original's flaws of camera work and acting.. or lack therof, and it still being a cult hit, the second will completely match, or succeed your expectations. This was an incredible film and I will beat off to this flick many many times...
